How Much Does a WordPress Developer Cost in 2026?

Real WordPress developer rates for 2026: hourly costs by type of developer, what common jobs cost, and how to avoid paying twice for cheap work.

WordPress developer working on a client website at a desk with a laptop and monitor

The short answer

  • WordPress developers charge roughly $20 to $150+ an hour. Location and experience explain most of the difference.
  • For context, the US median wage for web developers and digital designers was $47.85 an hour in May 2025, before benefits, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
  • Small fixes usually take one to three hours. Custom features and plugins are often priced as fixed projects, from a few hundred dollars upward.
  • The cheapest hourly rate rarely means the cheapest project. Rework, missing staging and unclear code ownership cost more later.

A WordPress developer costs anywhere from about $20 an hour for an offshore freelancer to $150 an hour or more for a senior specialist or US agency. For a small business, the more useful question is what a specific job will cost: a plugin conflict might be a one-hour fix, a custom feature a few hundred dollars, and a full custom theme a few thousand.

This guide breaks down WordPress developer rates by type of developer, what common jobs cost, when to pay hourly versus a fixed price, and the hidden costs that make a cheap quote expensive. We include our own published rates so you have a real benchmark to compare against.

WordPress developer rates at a glance

Published rate guides disagree a lot, partly because they define “senior” differently and partly because location changes everything. These ranges reflect what you’ll typically be quoted in 2026.

Type of developerTypical hourly rateGood for
Offshore freelancer (marketplace)$15 to $40Small, clearly defined tasks you can check yourself
Offshore agency or team$25 to $50Builds and ongoing work with project management included
US or UK freelancer$50 to $120Local collaboration and specialist work
Vetted expert marketplace$80 to $120 (Codeable, plus a 17.5% fee)Pre-screened WordPress experts for one-off projects
US or UK agency$100 to $200+Larger builds with strategy, design and support in one place
Ranges are typical market rates from published rate guides and marketplace pricing pages. Individual quotes vary.

The US benchmark comes from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics: a median of $99,520 a year, or $47.85 an hour, for web developers and digital designers (May 2025). Freelancers and agencies charge more than this because the rate also covers their overheads, tools, unpaid time between projects and, for agencies, project management. Codeable’s rates come from its published pricing page.

What decides how much a WordPress developer charges

Experience level

  • Junior developers can install themes and plugins, make content changes and fix simple styling issues. They need clear instructions and someone to review their work.
  • Mid-level developers build complete sites, customize themes, connect forms and email tools, and fix most plugin conflicts on their own.
  • Senior developers write custom plugins and block themes, handle WooCommerce at scale, integrate external systems, solve performance and security problems, and review other people’s code.

Paying a senior rate for content edits is wasteful. Paying a junior rate for a custom WooCommerce integration usually ends in a rebuild.

Location

The same skills cost very different amounts in different countries, because salaries and living costs differ. That is why many US and UK businesses, and many agencies, work with developers in Eastern Europe or South Asia. What matters is not where the developer lives but whether they communicate clearly, overlap with your working hours enough to answer questions, and follow professional practices like staging and version control. Our guide to offshore vs onshore web development covers the trade-offs in detail.

How the work is organized

A freelancer’s rate covers one person. An agency’s rate also covers project management, testing, backup developers when someone is ill, and a company that will still be there next year. Neither is automatically better. Freelancers suit small, well-defined jobs; agencies suit projects where missed deadlines or a developer disappearing would hurt your business.

What common WordPress jobs cost

Hourly rates only matter once you know how many hours a job takes. These are typical ranges for experienced developers. Complex sites take longer.

JobTypical timeTypical cost
Fix a plugin conflict or critical error1 to 3 hours$35 to $450
Small design or layout changes2 to 5 hours$70 to $750
Speed optimization for a small siteFixed projectAbout $250 to $1,000

Complex plugin or system integrationFixed projectFrom about $2,500

If you’re budgeting for a whole new site rather than a developer’s time, our guide to WordPress website costs breaks down build, hosting, plugin and maintenance costs separately.

Hourly, fixed price or a dedicated developer?

  • Hourly works best for fixes, small changes and anything hard to scope in advance. Ask for an estimate and a cap, and pay in small blocks rather than an open-ended tab.
  • Fixed price works best for anything you can describe in writing: a new feature, a plugin, a theme, a full site. You know the cost upfront, and the developer carries the risk of underestimating.
  • A dedicated developer, paid monthly, suits agencies and businesses with a steady stream of WordPress work. You get the same person every day, who learns your sites and processes.

Our WordPress developer rates

Our team is based in Gujrat, Pakistan and works remotely with businesses and agencies in the US, UK and Europe, which is why our rates sit well below most US agencies. Every price is published. If you want to hire WordPress developers from us, these are the options:

OptionPriceWhat’s included
On-demand development$35 an hourBooked in blocks of 5 hours; fixes, edits and small features; work tested on a staging copy first
Custom feature or pluginFrom $490Fixed scope agreed in writing, clean documented code, 30 days of fixes after delivery
Custom themeFrom $1,990Built from your Figma design, fully editable custom blocks, speed and accessibility checks
Complex plugins and integrationsFrom $2,490Quoted after we review the requirements
White-label hourly (for agencies)$28 an hourPrepaid blocks of 10 hours, NDA and no Attors branding
Dedicated white-label developerFrom $1,990 a monthFull-time mid-level developer working inside your agency’s tools; senior developers from $2,790 a month

Full details are on our WordPress development page and, for agencies, our white-label WordPress development page.

From our projects: We book on-demand work in five-hour blocks rather than billing by the minute, and every change is tested on a staging copy before it reaches the live site. Fixed-scope features come with 30 days of fixes after delivery, so if something we built misbehaves, it’s our problem, not a new invoice.

Example: three quotes for the same job

Say you need a custom booking form that sends enquiries into your CRM, and a developer estimates 20 hours of work. Here’s how the price changes with the rate, before any surprises:

  • $25 an hour offshore freelancer: $500
  • $35 an hour offshore agency: $700
  • $100 an hour US agency: $2,000

Now add what often happens with the cheapest option: the 20 hours become 35 because the requirements weren’t clear, the form breaks after a plugin update because it wasn’t built properly, and your own time goes into chasing and testing. A fixed quote with a clear scope and a fix period protects you from most of that, whichever rate you choose.

The hidden costs of a cheap WordPress developer

  • Rework. Code that works today but breaks on the next update means paying twice.
  • No staging. Changes made directly on your live site can take it down in front of customers.
  • Security gaps. Nulled premium plugins, weak passwords and outdated code are common causes of hacked sites.
  • Ownership problems. Make sure you own the code, the theme licence and every account, not the developer.
  • Disappearing developers. If one freelancer holds all the knowledge and stops answering, you start again with someone new.
  • Your time. Writing detailed instructions, checking work and reporting bugs is real cost, even if it never appears on an invoice.

Questions to ask before you hire

  1. Can you show me two or three WordPress sites you built or fixed, and what you did on each?
  2. Do you test changes on a staging copy before touching the live site?
  3. Will I own the code, and will you hand over all logins and licences?
  4. Is this a fixed price or an estimate, and what happens if it takes longer?
  5. What’s included after delivery? Is there a period where bugs are fixed for free?
  6. How many hours does your working day overlap with mine, and how quickly do you reply?
  7. Who takes over if you’re unavailable?

WordPress developer cost questions

How much does a WordPress developer charge per hour?

Most charge between $20 and $150 an hour. Offshore freelancers typically charge $15 to $40, US and UK freelancers $50 to $120, and US agencies $100 to $200 or more. Senior specialists in WooCommerce, performance or custom plugins sit at the top of each range.

How much does a WordPress developer charge for a website?

A professionally built small business website usually costs $900 to $3,000, and larger custom sites $3,000 to $10,000 or more. Ours start at $890 for up to five pages and $1,690 for a fully custom design of up to 12 pages.

Is it cheaper to hire a freelancer or an agency?

A freelancer’s hourly rate is usually lower, but agencies include project management, testing and cover when someone is unavailable. For small, well-defined tasks, a good freelancer is often cheaper overall. For projects with deadlines or several moving parts, an agency often costs less once rework and delays are counted.

Why do WordPress developer rates vary so much?

Mainly because of location and experience. Living costs and salaries differ hugely between countries, and a senior developer who writes custom plugins does very different work from someone who installs themes. Agency rates also cover management and support that a solo freelancer doesn’t provide.

How much do WordPress developers charge for small fixes?

Most small fixes take one to three hours, so expect roughly $35 to $450 depending on the developer’s rate. Many developers have a minimum charge or sell time in blocks. Ours is $35 an hour in five-hour blocks, which you can use across several small jobs.

Should I pay a WordPress developer hourly or a fixed price?

Pay hourly for fixes and small changes that are hard to scope. Pay a fixed price for anything you can describe in writing, like a feature, plugin, theme or full site. A fixed price moves the risk of underestimating onto the developer, which protects your budget.

How much does a custom WordPress plugin cost?

A small plugin that does one clearly defined job typically starts at around $500. Plugins that integrate with other systems, handle payments or manage complex data usually start at $2,500 or more. Our custom features start at $490, and complex plugins and integrations at $2,490.

How much does it cost to hire a full-time WordPress developer?

In the US, an in-house web developer’s median wage was about $99,520 a year in May 2025, before benefits and payroll costs. A dedicated remote developer through an agency costs much less: our full-time white-label developers start at $1,990 a month for mid-level and $2,790 a month for senior.

Is a $15 an hour WordPress developer worth it?

Sometimes, for simple tasks you can check yourself, like content updates. For anything that touches your site’s security, checkout or custom code, the risk of rework usually outweighs the saving. Judge developers on their past work, communication and process, not the rate alone.
