How to Plan a Website Sitemap That Helps Buyers and Google

A step-by-step guide to planning your website's page structure, with a B2B sitemap example, page-by-page purpose and tips that help buyers and SEO.

A website sitemap plan is a map of every page your site needs and how those pages connect. Start from the questions buyers ask and the actions you want them to take, then group pages into clear sections: services, industries, proof, resources and company information. A good sitemap makes navigation obvious, gives every keyword one strong page and helps Google understand which pages matter most.

Quick answer: list buyer questions, give each important service its own page, group pages into 5 to 7 main sections, keep key pages within 3 clicks of the homepage and give every page one clear purpose.

Two types of sitemap

  • A planning sitemap (this guide) is a diagram or spreadsheet of pages used to design the site.
  • An XML sitemap is a file that lists your URLs for search engines. Your CMS usually creates it automatically once the site is built.

Step 1: Start with buyer questions

Before listing pages, write down what buyers need to know before they contact you:

  • What exactly do you offer, and is it right for me?
  • How much does it cost and how long does it take?
  • Have you done this for businesses like mine?
  • How does working with you actually work?
  • Can I trust you?

Each important question should be answered by a page or a clear section.

Step 2: Give every main service its own page

One page per service lets each one rank for its own searches and speak to a specific buyer. A single “Services” page with everything on it rarely ranks well for any of them.

Step 3: Group pages into clear sections

Most business websites work well with 5 to 7 main sections. Here is a structure we often use for B2B service companies.

Example B2B website sitemap

SectionPagesPurpose
HomeHomepageExplain who you help and route visitors
ServicesOne page per service, plus a services overviewRank for commercial searches and convert buyers
IndustriesOne page per key industryShow relevant experience and language
ProofCase studies, portfolio, reviewsBuild trust and support decisions
PricingPricing or packages pageAnswer cost questions and qualify leads
ResourcesBlog, guides, FAQsAttract searches earlier in the journey
CompanyAbout, team, careers, contactBuild credibility and make contact easy

Step 4: Keep the structure shallow

Important pages should be no more than three clicks from the homepage. Use the main menu for top sections, and link related pages to each other in the content, such as a service page linking to relevant case studies and guides.

Step 5: Plan URLs early

Use short, readable URLs that match the structure, such as /services/website-redesign/ or /industries/healthcare/. Changing URLs later means redirects, so get them right before launch.

Step 6: Map keywords to pages

Give every page one main keyword and avoid two pages targeting the same search. Our guide to service pages vs blog posts explains how to split commercial and informational keywords.

Common sitemap mistakes

  • One page trying to cover every service.
  • Menus organised around your internal departments instead of buyer needs.
  • Thin location or industry pages with copied content.
  • No clear path from blog posts to service pages.
  • Too many top-level menu items.

Website sitemap planning questions

What is a website sitemap?

It is a plan of all the pages on a website and how they connect. An XML sitemap is a separate file that lists URLs for search engines.

How many pages should a business website have?

Enough to give each main service, key industry and important buyer question its own page. Small businesses often start with 8 to 20 pages.

Should each service have its own page?

Yes. Separate service pages rank better for specific searches and let you speak directly to each type of buyer.

How deep should website navigation go?

Keep key pages within three clicks of the homepage. Deep pages are harder for visitors and search engines to find.

What tools can I use to plan a sitemap?

A spreadsheet works well. Visual tools such as Figma, Miro or Octopus.do help when you want a diagram to share with your team.

Do I need to submit an XML sitemap to Google?

It is recommended. Submit it in Google Search Console so Google can discover your pages faster.
