How to Rank in ChatGPT and AI Search: A Practical Guide for B2B Websites
A practical guide to AI search optimization for B2B websites: how ChatGPT and AI Overviews choose sources, what to change on your site and how to measure results.

To show up in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, your website must be crawlable by their search bots, answer buyer questions clearly in plain HTML, and be backed by consistent signals about your company across the web. AI search tools pull from search indexes and pages they can read, then cite sources that answer the question directly. There is no special trick or guaranteed placement. It is good SEO with a sharper focus on clear answers and trust.
Quick answer: allow AI search crawlers, put direct answers near the top of key pages, use specific facts and prices, keep your company details consistent everywhere and track AI referral traffic in analytics.
How AI search tools choose sources
| Tool | Main source of web results | What helps you appear |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google’s search index | Strong Google rankings and clear, quotable answers |
| ChatGPT search | Its own crawler plus partner search indexes, including Bing | Being indexed in Bing, allowing OAI-SearchBot, clear answers |
| Perplexity | Its own crawler and web index | Allowing PerplexityBot, fresh and specific content |
| Microsoft Copilot | Bing’s index | Bing Webmaster Tools, strong Bing visibility |
If your site does not rank or is not indexed in normal search, AI tools are unlikely to cite it. Traditional SEO is the foundation.
Step 1: Make sure AI crawlers can access your site
Check your robots.txt and firewall settings. Blocking AI search crawlers means they cannot read or cite your pages.
- OAI-SearchBot is used for ChatGPT search results. GPTBot is used for training. You can allow search while blocking training.
- PerplexityBot powers Perplexity’s index.
- Bingbot feeds Bing and Copilot, and is used by ChatGPT search too.
- Google-Extended controls use of your content for Gemini training, not Google Search.
Also verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap, because many AI answers draw on Bing.
Step 2: Write answer-first content
AI tools extract short passages. Make each key page easy to quote.
- Start important sections with a direct one or two sentence answer.
- Use question-style headings that match how buyers ask.
- Give specific facts: prices, timelines, numbers, named tools and clear comparisons.
- Use tables for comparisons and lists for steps.
- Keep paragraphs short and each section focused on one idea.
Step 3: Put key content in the HTML
Many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. If your service descriptions, prices or FAQs only appear after scripts load, they may be invisible. Server-rendered HTML is safest. Our JavaScript SEO guide explains how to check.
Step 4: Strengthen company and entity signals
AI tools try to understand who you are. Make that easy.
- Use the same company name, address and description on your site, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, Clutch and directories.
- Add Organization schema with your logo, contact details and social profiles.
- Publish real case studies with named clients, results and dates where you can.
- Show author names and expertise on articles.
- Earn mentions on industry sites, podcasts and review platforms, because AI tools weigh third-party sources.
Step 5: Cover the questions B2B buyers ask
B2B buyers ask AI tools to compare vendors, explain costs and shortlist options. Create pages that answer:
- “How much does [your service] cost?”
- “[Option A] vs [option B]: which is better for [use case]?”
- “Best [service] companies for [industry]”
- “How long does [project] take?”
Service pages should carry the commercial answers. Blog posts should support them with detail and link back.
Step 6: Measure AI search visibility
- In Google Analytics, create a segment for referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com.
- Track AI Overview impressions within Google Search Console performance data.
- Test a fixed list of buyer prompts monthly and record whether your brand is mentioned or cited.
- Ask new leads how they found you, and add “AI assistant” as an option.
What about llms.txt?
llms.txt is a proposed file that lists your key pages for AI tools. It is optional and Google does not use it for Search. It does no harm, but crawler access, clear content and authority matter far more.

Our SEO audit and AI search optimization checks crawler access, content structure and entity signals for $390, or $890 with fixes. For ongoing growth, our monthly SEO services start at $390 a month and include AI search tracking.
From our projects: For an AI automation provider with several service lines, we gave each service its own clear page and answer-first copy, so both buyers and AI tools can tell the offers apart.
What the research says: Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Pages need to be indexed, eligible for a snippet and genuinely helpful. (Source: Google’s guide to AI features in Search.)
AI search optimization questions
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
No. There is no paid placement in organic ChatGPT answers. Visibility comes from being indexed, trusted and clearly answering the question.
Is AI search optimization different from SEO?
It builds on SEO. The same foundations apply, with extra focus on direct answers, specific facts, crawlable HTML and consistent brand signals across the web.
Should I block GPTBot?
You can block GPTBot to opt out of training while still allowing OAI-SearchBot so your pages can appear in ChatGPT search. Decide based on your content policy.
How long does it take to appear in AI answers?
It varies. Once pages are indexed and answer questions well, citations can appear within weeks. Building brand authority across the web takes longer.
Does schema markup help with AI search?
Schema helps machines understand your company and pages, but it does not guarantee citations. Clear visible content matters more.
How do I know if ChatGPT mentions my company?
Test buyer questions regularly, check referral traffic from chatgpt.com in analytics and ask new leads how they found you.
